Coping Tools are like a "toothbrush for the mind."

Updated: Mar 22

Just as we teach our children to brush their teeth daily to maintain dental health, it's equally vital to equip them with coping tools to nurture their mental and emotional well-being. These tools serve as the "toothbrushes" for the mind, helping individuals navigate life's challenges with resilience and grace.

The Importance of Mental Hygiene

Mental health challenges are increasingly prevalent among youth. Globally, approximately 165 million adolescents are affected by mental disorders (1). In the United States, about 1 in 5 adolescents aged 12–17 reported experiencing anxiety symptoms in the past two weeks, and approximately 17% reported symptoms of depression (2). Alarmingly, 1 in 5 high school students have seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year.

The Consequences of Inadequate Coping Skills

A deficiency in effective coping mechanisms has been linked to severe mental health outcomes. Without proper coping strategies, children and adolescents may struggle to manage stress, leading to increased vulnerability to mental health issues. In 2022, Texas Children's Hospital reported an 800% increase in pediatric mental health emergencies, underscoring the urgent need for effective coping tools (3).

Normalizing the Use of Coping Tools

To foster a culture where mental hygiene is as routine as dental hygiene, consider the following strategies:

  1. Model Coping Strategies: Demonstrate healthy coping mechanisms in daily life. For instance, openly express feelings of stress and show how you manage them constructively.

  1. Integrate Coping Tools into Daily Routines: Encourage regular practices such as mindfulness exercises, journaling, or physical activity to build resilience.

  1. Educate About Mental Health: Teach children about emotions and coping strategies through age-appropriate discussions and resources.

  1. Create a Supportive Environment: Foster open communication, allowing children to express their feelings without judgment.

  1. Collaborate with Schools: Advocate for the inclusion of social-emotional learning programs that teach coping skills within the educational curriculum.

Creating Psycho-Logic: Connecting Emotions to Actions

Explicitly teaching children the link between emotions and coping actions enhances their emotional intelligence. For example, a parent might say, "I am feeling overwhelmed..." Then, they take a few deep breaths and let them out with a sound, such as a sigh or a "Vooo" sound. They continue this until they feel a bit better.

Afterward, they make the connection explicit by asking a thought-provoking question: "When I was feeling overwhelmed... what did you notice me doing?" Children might respond with observations like "breathing" or "doing the voo exercise." This process helps children understand that emotions are manageable and that specific strategies can alleviate distress. By modeling and verbalizing coping actions, parents empower children with tools to regulate their own emotions effectively.

P.S. The "Voo" exercise was developed by trauma expert Peter Levine. This exercise involves taking a deep breath and then making a "voo" sound during exhalation, which can help stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. Incorporating such practices into daily routines can empower children to manage their emotions effectively. And of course, modeling and guiding are critical. The younger we start, the higher the chance that children will develop the necessary skills to navigate the emotional ups and downs of life without getting bogged down with heavy emotions - especially in the teen years. Coping skills are foundational to resilience.
