What do you need to know about Family Coaching?

  • Family coaching is meant to help a family set goals and develop skills and routines to problem-solve challenging situations to prevent minor challenges from becoming major problems.

  • Family coaching is focused on children's social and emotional development, while improving and growing as a family ‘team.’

  • Parents will need to be willing to undergo personal reflection and introspection with an understanding that daily routines and ‘ways of doing things’ will shift in order achieve the desired outcomes.

  • Family coaching helps to make a challenge easier to experience and less likely to result in negative outcomes.

  • A family coach complements the role of the family; we know that families have good intentions, they care for each other, they love each other and they know a lot about themselves; a coach's job is to support a family like a child would need extra support in a particular subject or in a sport or just in life in general, families in and of themselves also need support in different ways. It’s important to have realistic expectations about goals and outcomes and clear expectations for a Coach and family members’ roles.

How does it work?

  • Over the first 5 sessions, we build a foundation from which the following sessions will then be based. The topics of discussion will be modified overtime as goals are met and new challenges are prioritized using a technique called ‘Spot Coaching.’ Spot coaching allows the coach and parents to determine the challenge which is the highest priority and identify the skill needed to overcome the challenge.

  • Parents will invest their family and children's time and energy and resources to support their children's long-term healthy development.

  • Family coaching involves recognizing a pattern and then guiding adaptation or providing a new way of doing something in order to rectify a situation.

  • A typical session would include starting off using the adventures in wisdom curriculum; a specific heart and mind stimulating activity, then we would move into reviewing the past week’s session, and any developments since the last session including sharing accomplishments, favorite moments or compliments. Then we would go into the family's attempts to implement techniques and tools. Each session will involve stories, fun activities, journal-time, workbooks and more!

  • Each session is closed out by understanding how we need to set a single achievable goal for each family member by the next appointment because we know change occurs overtime through incremental successes.
